This research introduces "subspace restart," a technique that selectively resets internal degrees of freedom in discrete-time quantum walks while preserving spatial distribution, thereby engineering a controlled drifted-diffusion regime. By leveraging a Huygens-Fresnel mechanism to screen long-range correlations, the method effectively manages the transition from coherent quantum behavior to classical dynamics without erasing prior system history. This advancement offers new pathways for controlling decoherence and manipulating transport properties in synthetic lattice systems relevant to fundamental quantum simulation.

Subspace Restart Drives Quantum Walks Into Drifted-Diffusion Regime

This work introduces subspace restart, a method of periodically resetting internal degrees of freedom in a quantum process while maintaining spatial distribution, to control the transition from quantum to classical behavior. Applying this technique to discrete-time quantum walks results in an engineered drifted-diffusion regime, altering the walker’s spread and drift.

Researchers have discovered a way to engineer a quantum system to mimic classical behavior through a novel technique called subspace restart. Unlike traditional quantum reinitialization, which erases all prior information, this process selectively resets only the properties of a quantum walk while maintaining its spatial distribution. The team, Liwei Qiao, Ruoyu Yin, and Wei Zhang, demonstrates that this selective reset drives the quantum walk into an engineered drifted-diffusion regime, allowing for control over both drift and diffusion, key characteristics of classical systems. This phenomenon, they explain, arises from…
