This work shows entanglement between two different atomic species (strontium and calcium) across a quantum network, with some states involving up to four atoms. The headline result is that calcium's lower sensitivity to magnetic-field noise extends entanglement lifetime from milliseconds to over 10 seconds. Both results are laboratory demonstrations, and the path to a practical distributed quantum computer remains long, but the lifetime gain addresses a real bottleneck for linking heterogeneous quantum processors.
Strontium links atoms, calcium preserves entanglement for longer

Physicists at the University of Oxford have used a quantum network to entangle several atoms, specifically strontium and calcium, across two separate locations. The team used calcium atoms to preserve the entanglement for more than 10 seconds, creating shared quantum states involving up to four atoms.
