Google's general availability of Spanner Omni marks a significant shift from hardware-dependent infrastructure to software-defined time and storage synchronization, enabling distributed SQL workloads in diverse environments without Google's managed SLA. While the underlying consensus engine remains robust, practitioners must now account for increased operational toil and potential tail latency variations when managing failure domains within their own data centers or on-premises setups.

Spanner Omni Reaches GA, Replacing Google's Atomic Clocks and File System with Software

InfoQ5 min de cititArticolul și perspectiva sunt în engleză.

Google has made Spanner Omni generally available, running its distributed SQL database on-premises, across clouds or on a laptop. Doing so meant replacing Colossus with a Colossus-like abstraction layer and TrueTime with software-based time synchronization. There is no availability SLA, and practitioners are pricing the move in tail latency and operational toil. By Steef-Jan Wiggers

Google has made Spanner Omni generally available, a deploy-anywhere version of its distributed SQL database that runs in a customer's own data center, on other clouds, or on a laptop. Getting Spanner off Google's infrastructure meant replacing the two components it depended on most: Colossus, the distributed file system, and TrueTime, the clock service built on atomic clocks and GPS. What does not come with it is an availability SLA. The engineering is the part Google describes most plainly. In place of Colossus, Spanner Omni introduces what the company calls a Colossus-like abstraction layer, writing…
