This research advances scalable quantum networking by demonstrating that high-fidelity photon indistinguishability can be achieved with fewer-nanosecond laser pulses, reducing equipment demands while maintaining strong entanglement swapping capabilities. The study provides a crucial numerical framework for optimizing excitation parameters to minimize spontaneous back-decays in trapped calcium ions, directly improving Hong-Ou-Mandel visibility for practical quantum communication systems.

Saarlandes Team Simulates Calcium Ion Photon Indistinguishability

Quantum Zeitgeist3 min de cititArticolul și perspectiva sunt în engleză.

Previously linking atomic decay to photon interference relied on limited experimental observation. Now, detailed numerical modelling expands this understanding by probing a wider parameter region and explicitly addressing optimisation regarding both photon generation rate and how closely matched photons must be for quantum networking. This work identifies correlations applicable across various trapped ion and atom types, opening new avenues for building scalable quantum technologies.

The indistinguishability of single photons generated from single trapped Ca + ions in a Raman scattering process driven by few-nanosecond excitation pulses is theoretically investigated. Spontaneous decay back to the initial state and its effect on Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) photon interference are of particular interest. Numerical simulations identify the mean number of back-decays as a measurable quantity correlating with achievable…
