This study demonstrates that optimizing the physical layout of neutral rubidium-87 atoms significantly enhances two-qubit operation fidelity to 94%, surpassing previous limitations where errors were orders of magnitude higher. By proving that spatial configuration outweighs specific excitation schemes in determining stability, this work provides a critical pathway toward scaling quantum processors with greater control and coherence retention.
Rydberg Atom Arrangement Boosts Quantum Operation Fidelity, Study Finds

Two-qubit operations are typically plagued by errors, often characterised by values two or three orders of magnitude lower than required for useful computation. Now, a fidelity of 94% has been achieved using neutral rubidium-87 atoms, a marked improvement demonstrating that precise spatial arrangement of qubits matters more than the specific excitation method employed. This work highlights how optimising qubit layout can unlock greater control and stability in quantum systems.
I. V. Iukhnovets of the Lebedev Physical Institute, Quantum Technology Centre and Faculty of Physics, M. V. Lomonosov Moscow State University, Technical University of Munich, and Russian Quantum Centre, and colleagues detail a new experimental setup for performing two-qubit operations on neutral rubidium-87 atoms. They explore two distinct Rydberg excitation schemes, utilising both 5P1/2 and 6P3/2 intermediate levels to achieve entanglement. Their…
