Researchers have developed a new qubit mapping technique called Derby-Klassen (DK) that significantly reduces computational overhead for simulating complex fermionic systems on near-term quantum hardware. By minimizing operator nonlocality, this method overcomes the scaling limitations of traditional encodings like Jordan-Wigner, enabling more efficient modeling of low-energy properties in two-dimensional materials. This advancement represents a critical step toward making previously intractable quantum chemistry and materials science simulations feasible with current technology.

Previously intractable simulations are now within reach thanks to a new approach which dramatically reduces computational demands. By minimising operator ‘nonlocality’, the spread of interactions across qubits, this method overcomes limitations inherent in conventional qubit encoding schemes like Jordan, Wigner. This enables more efficient modelling of complex materials using near-term quantum computers.

A new approach to simulating complex materials using quantum computers is now available through work conducted at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai, alongside colleagues from Southampton and Wuhan. The method utilises the Derby-Klassen (DK) mapping, a technique preserving interactions between fermions, allowing accurate reproduction of low-energy properties within two-dimensional models via variational quantum simulation. The new computational technique improves simulations of materials by representing electron interactions more…
