This study demonstrates that current quantum hardware has surpassed classical computational limits by simulating 50-site spin chains with high entangling-gate depths, successfully resolving long-standing discrepancies in the phase diagrams of dissipative Heisenberg systems. The achievement validates the utility of near-term quantum devices for modeling complex interacting spins and energy dissipation in materials, marking a significant step toward solving open problems previously inaccessible to classical methods.
Researchers Simulate 50-Site Chain Resolving Steady State Physics

At 1700 entangling-gate depths, exceeding previous computational limits, researchers have mapped the complete steady-state behaviour of complex interacting spins using real quantum hardware. This simulation resolves longstanding discrepancies concerning the fundamental ordering within these chains, previously intractable due to exponential increases in required computing power. Confirming theoretical predictions, it demonstrates current devices can tackle open quantum problems beyond classical reach.
Determining the correct phase diagram for dissipative spin-½ Heisenberg chains has remained an open challenge due to limitations in numerical methods. Simulations using quantum hardware have now successfully modelled these systems up to 50 sites, requiring 100 qubits with circuits reaching a depth of 1700 entangling-gate depths. The results resolve ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, spin-density-wave and paramagnetic steady states; largely settling previous uncertainty regarding this benchmark system’s correct phase diagram. Quantum computers accurately simulate complex materials exhibiting energy dissipation, known as spin chains. The team at North Carolina State University…
