The work proves QKD security by bounding how much information leaks from Alice's emitted signals, rather than by modelling her device in detail. That approach could make security proofs more practical, though the result applies to collective attacks and the reported gains (tolerating visibility down to 0.84, or an 8% error rate, versus 11% for device-dependent BB84) still need independent verification. Readers should watch whether the leakage-bound method extends to stronger attack models and real hardware.

Researchers Secure Keys with a New Information Leakage Bound

Quantum Zeitgeist4 min de cititArticolul și perspectiva sunt în engleză.

Quantum key distribution now tolerates visibility levels as low as 0. 84, equating to an 8% quantum bit error rate, a marked improvement over the 11% previously achievable with standard methods. This advance demonstrates security can be proven by bounding information leakage from all signals, rather than requiring detailed knowledge of QKD system internals.

Until now, proving security in prepare-and-measure quantum key distribution needed detailed modelling of devices; a team at Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and Lund University has bypassed this requirement. Bounding information leakage from Alice’s device, the probability of guessing her input, guarantees secure communication against collective attacks. Their best protocols achieve one secret bit per round under ideal conditions and tolerate visibilities down to 0.84, equivalent to an 8%…
