This research establishes a well-defined Hamiltonian for Quantum Chromodynamics up to the second order in the coupling constant by resolving infrared divergences through renormalisation group procedures. By ensuring finite matrix elements within the colour singlet subspace, this work provides a robust theoretical foundation essential for advancing non-perturbative simulations on both classical and quantum computing architectures. The advancement directly addresses long-standing challenges in QCD calculations that previously hindered stable numerical studies of strong force phenomena.

Researchers Renormalise Quantum Chromodynamics Hamiltonian to Second Order

Quantum Zeitgeist6 min de cititArticolul și perspectiva sunt în engleză.

Up to second order in the coupling constant, calculations now yield a well-defined and symmetric Hamiltonian for quantum chromodynamics. This represents a departure from previous methods, delivering finite matrix elements within the colour singlet subspace as the gluon mass diminishes. These newly calculated Hamiltonians are uniquely suited for nonperturbative numerical studies utilising both conventional and quantum computing platforms.

Scientists at Tufts University have completed a detailed investigation into the effective Hamiltonian of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The team meticulously calculated and renormalised this Hamiltonian within the framework of Hamiltonian dynamics, employing a small gluon mass as a regulator for infrared singularities. This approach addresses a long-standing issue in QCD calculations, where infinities arise due to the behaviour of the theory at very short distances or low momentum transfer. The interplay between self-energy and gluon exchange generates a term proportional to the quadratic SU Casimir operator, leading to logarithmic divergence in the colour nonsinglet subspace but remaining finite within the colour singlet subspace.…
