This study introduces a refined mathematical framework using retrodiction to quantify the degree of objectivity in quantum measurements, distinguishing between revealing pre-existing properties and creating them through observation. By decomposing non-objectivity into unsharpness and asymmetry components, the research establishes a new boundary for interpreting probabilistic outcomes without resolving the fundamental debate on reality itself.

Researchers Quantify How Objective a Quantum Measurement Is

Zero net change in quantum measurement ‘non-objectivity’ defines a new boundary for interpreting probabilistic outcomes. Unlike previous approaches, this work demonstrates how reductions in measurement asymmetry, indicating greater objectivity, are always balanced by increases in inherent uncertainty. This decomposition into unsharpness and asymmetry tensors offers refined tools for assessing when measurements reveal pre-existing properties rather than creating them.

An optimised Hirschfeld, Gebelein, Rényi non-objectivity score of 0.2 quantifies how many quantum measurements reveal pre-existing properties. Determining when a measurement reveals an actual property rather than creating it previously lacked precise quantification, however Jiaxi Kuang and colleagues at Nagoya University have devised a method using quantum measurement retrodiction to address this challenge. This provides a way to quantify existing properties revealed by quantum measurements instead of simply identifying if an…
