This research demonstrates a significant breakthrough in superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) technology by achieving sub-41 picosecond timing jitter for resolving multiple simultaneous photons. By utilizing a dual-trigger system to analyze pulse rise and fall times, the method eliminates the need for post-processing while maintaining high confidence in photon counting, which is critical for scaling quantum communication and computing systems.

Researchers Map Photon Number Using Nanowire Detector Timings

Quantum Zeitgeist3 min de cititArticolul și perspectiva sunt în engleză.

Detection times once blurred with each additional photon now sharpen to less than 41 picoseconds when two or more are registered simultaneously. This advance overcomes limitations of existing methods which required post-processing to resolve variations in detection timing dependent on photon number. The technique assigns detected photons, one, two or three, with 99% certainty by analysing detector pulse characteristics.

A new method for photon-number-resolving detectors accurately identifies detection events originating from one, two or three photons with 99 % posterior confidence across all three classes. The dual-trigger technique maps the number of detected photons onto the time difference between when a detector pulse rises and falls; enabling clear separation of these distinct events whilst maintaining precise timing information.…
