This study maps the evolution of hydrogen-related defects in diamond during fabrication and annealing, directly addressing a critical bottleneck for maintaining coherence in diamond-based quantum qubits. By identifying specific defect clusters that vanish at high temperatures, the research provides essential data for optimizing material purity to enhance the performance of future quantum sensors and processors.

Researchers Map Hydrogen Defects Limiting Diamond Qubit Coherence

Until now, understanding how irradiation impacts diamond’s potential as a quantum sensor demanded separate analysis of processing *and* initial growth stages. Detailed DEER spectroscopy reveals an ‘X ensemble’ of defects initially comprising vacancies and interstitials disappearing by 650°C, before vacancy clusters persist up to 1000°C. This complete picture, tracking defect evolution from creation through annealing, extends beyond nitrogen control towards optimising materials for precision magnetometry and nanoscale NMR.

Olga Rubinas and colleagues at Material Research and IMOMEC have detailed defect evolution throughout chemical vapour deposition diamond fabrication stages, from initial growth through post-processing, extending previous studies which focused only on properties after annealing. Using double electron, electron resonance spectroscopy, a technique sensitive to magnetic fields at nanoscale, they tracked alterations occurring during irradiation and subsequent heat treatment, or annealing. The team mapped defect evolution during chemical vapour deposition diamond fabrication using…
