The paper proposes spectral metrics (normalized minimum Hamiltonian eigenvalue separation and long-time averaged minimum unitary eigenvalue separation) for predicting QAOA mixer quality from topology alone. Its key caveat is that these predictions hold only when the problem has no hidden structure within the cost Hamiltonian; otherwise, mixer choice must be matched to the specific problem. For practitioners, this suggests structure-agnostic mixer selection has limits, though the results are based on specific graph families (complete graphs, hypercubes, cycles, tori) and need broader validation.

Researchers Link Graph Structure to Quantum Optimization Mixers

Until now, selecting quantum optimisation algorithms relied on trial and error, choosing mixers based more on what’s easy to build than fundamental properties. This work demonstrates a surprising limit: topological features predicting mixer quality hold true only when problem structure remains hidden within the cost Hamiltonian. Beyond that point, successful mixing demands matching the algorithm's design to the specific challenge at hand; comparisons spanned complete graphs, hypercubes, cycles and tori.

New metrics now characterise quantum approximate optimisation algorithm (QAOA) mixer designs based on their underlying spectral structure; this prediction enables identification of topologies that will best explore solution spaces. Jasjyot Singh Gulati from IIIT-Delhi and Tharrmashastha SAPV EulerQ developed normalized minimum Hamiltonian eigenvalue separation and long-time averaged minimum unitary eigenvalue separation as tools to assess these mixers. The team created new methods to evaluate how well different “mixer” designs function within the quantum approximate optimisation algorithm…
