This research demonstrates stable room-temperature levitation of a soft magnet using a Paul trap, enabling enhanced coupling between mechanical motion and internal spin waves without cryogenic cooling. By achieving a quality factor significantly higher than previous hard-magnet experiments, the study opens pathways for novel quantum devices that operate at ambient temperatures while maintaining strong magnon interactions.

Researchers Levitate YIG Sphere with Magnetic Paul Trap

Quantum Zeitgeist4 min de cititArticolul și perspectiva sunt în engleză.

Until now, magnetic levitation capable of exploiting strong coupling between motion and spin waves required cryogenic cooling. Yttrium iron garnet, a ‘soft’ magnet, has been stably levitated at room temperature using a magnetic Paul trap, a feat previously limited to ‘hard’ magnets. This allows observation of a cooperativity exceeding unity, suggesting potential for novel quantum devices despite mechanical damping.

A. O. Yakymenko and colleagues at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology have achieved stable levitation of an yttrium iron garnet sphere at room temperature using a magnetic Paul trap. This feat was previously limited to hard magnets. Achieving a quality factor of approximately 25 provides enhanced coupling between the sphere’s motion and its internal spin waves, with a cooperativity exceeding unity despite mechanical damping. The researchers…
