This research advances quantum control techniques by demonstrating the induction of molecular chirality through precise manipulation of internal rotational angular momentum rather than external forces. The ability to create chiral superpositions in symmetric top molecules using specific microwave and optical pulse sequences represents a significant step toward dynamic control of quantum states without relying on static structural asymmetry.

Researchers Induce Chirality Via Molecular Angular Momentum Control

Controlling molecular handedness has long relied on either inherent structural asymmetry or external forces acting upon molecules; now, researchers have demonstrated a pathway to induce chirality through internal rotations alone. However, symmetric top molecules, those where dipole moments align along their primary symmetry axis, prove more resistant to manipulation using these techniques. While effective at generating chiral superpositions, achieving comparable control over such systems requires transitions perpendicular to this dominant dipole moment, presenting an immediate challenge for broadening applicability. Still, acknowledging that achieving such control proves more difficult with symmetric top molecules, those where electrical dipole moments align along a primary axis, this work represents significant progress nonetheless. Successfully creating chiral superpositions even briefly expands understanding beyond static structural asymmetry; it demonstrates dynamic chirality arising from molecular movement itself. Researchers have demonstrated a method using microwave and laser pulses to temporarily create chiral molecules from non-chiral ones; chirality describes how molecules exist as left- and right-handed forms. This control relies on manipulating internal molecular rotations rather than external forces or static structure.

Achiral molecules have been prepared in states exhibiting chirality through control of their internal rotations. Manipulation of angular momentum within the molecule achieves this, then relying on external orientation as previous methods did. Either three microwave pulses or combinations of optical and THz pulses, all with mutually orthogonal polarization directions, induce the effect. A new technique generates chirality within molecules by controlling their internal rotations instead of external forces. This method manipulates…
