Researchers have developed a novel technique using controlled oxygen diffusion to create high-quality, deep defects in silicon carbide, overcoming the depth and uniformity limitations of traditional ion implantation. By identifying PL6 signals as originating from oxygen-vacancy complexes, this work enables more stable qubits and enhanced sensing capabilities essential for practical quantum applications.

Researchers Identify Oxygen-Vacancy Defects Deep in Silicon Carbide

Until now, creating dependable quantum sensors within silicon carbide has been limited by shallow depths *and* uneven performance arising from how defects were introduced. This work overcomes those limitations through controlled oxygen diffusion, achieving high-quality defects deeper inside the material than previously possible with ion implantation. Conclusive evidence also links the bright ‘PL6’ signal to an oxygen vacancy complex, paving the way for uniform, stable qubits in SiC.

High-quality paramagnetic defects in silicon carbide have been engineered by decoupling oxygen introduction from defect creation; this overcomes limitations imposed by previous methods reliant on ion implantation. This approach enables the formation of these defects deeper within the material and with greater uniformity than previously possible, improving both sensing capabilities and microscopic identification. Detailed analysis of hyperfine interactions across multiple samples conclusively identified PL6 defects as originating from an oxygen-vacancy complex. A method to create…
