This theoretical study models how a quantum detector's coherence decays in open space, near a reflecting surface, and inside a cavity. It reports partial, non-monotonic survival of coherence near boundaries and oscillatory behaviour in cavities. The results are analytical and have not been tested experimentally, so they show that boundary geometry can change decoherence rates but do not yet establish a practical method for quantum hardware.

Researchers Find Boundaries Preserve Quantum Coherence

Initial coherence within detectors, lost instantly in free space, can now be actively maintained using strategically positioned boundaries. Unlike previous work focusing on different coupling schemes, this research demonstrates partial preservation through non-monotonic decay near reflecting surfaces and even oscillating behaviour when enclosed within cavities. The extent to which coherence survives exceeds that found with single reflectors alone.

Engineering quantum coherence through boundary conditions is now possible thanks to theoretical work detailing how detector placement impacts decoherence dynamics. Zi’an Zhao from Ningbo University and Wenting Zhou have rigorously evaluated the loss of a quantum system’s initial coherence when coupled to fluctuating quantum fields, examining scenarios including open space, reflecting boundaries, and cavities. Controlling a quantum object’s environment, specifically using cavities than simple reflectors, can slow down how quickly it loses its…
