Researchers from the Indian Institute of Science have introduced an "appending construction" that extends Calderbank-Shor-Steane (CSS) quantum error correction codes by adding physical qubits. This technique enables multiple logical Z-rotations through transversal operations, eliminating the need for frequent code switching and expanding the set of realizable diagonal gates without complex structural changes.
Researchers Extend Quantum Codes to Realise Multiple Rotations with Added Qubits

Extending existing quantum error correction codes now requires adding only n’’ physical qubits to an initial [[n’,k’]] structure, creating an [[n,k]] code where n = n’+n’’. This “appending construction” circumvents previous limitations restricting transversal Z-rotations to single-qubit and controlled-Z operations alone. Consequently, diverse sets of diagonal gates become realisable without extensive code switching beyond Hadamard implementations.
The Indian Institute of Science has developed an appending construction technique that extends existing Calderbank-Shor-Steane (CSS) codes by adding physical qubits. It enables realisation of multiple desired logical Z-rotations via transversal physical Z-rotations; previously CSS codes could only realise single-qubit and multi-qubit controlled-Z rotations in this way. The resulting CSS code takes the form [[(n −1)l, l, ≥d −1]], where ‘n’ represents the number…
