A deterministic fusion operation that links small entangled states into larger graph states is a meaningful step for measurement-based quantum computing, where scaling entanglement is a central bottleneck. The coverage is muddled, though: it describes photonic qubits, superconducting circuits, and matter qubits interchangeably, so readers should check the original paper for the actual hardware platform and the size and fidelity of the result. Claims about secure networks and practical quantum computers remain prospective.

Researchers Entangle 13 Photons to Build Larger Quantum Graphs

Quantum Zeitgeist6 min de cititArticolul și perspectiva sunt în engleză.

Before now, creating dependable links between more than twelve entangled photons proved exceptionally difficult. This work demonstrates deterministic fusion to generate genuine multipartite entanglement across thirteen photonic qubits, surpassing previous limits on topological complexity. The advance establishes a new pathway toward building larger, reconfigurable states essential for practical quantum computers and secure communication networks.

Measurement-based quantum computing and memory-less quantum repeaters are key areas of research. Although some initial examples have been successfully prepared, creating large-scale graph states with programmable connections at scale remains an outstanding challenge. Fusion offers a promising “divide-and-conquer” approach by linking smaller resource states into larger, more complex graphs. However, its practical scalability has been limited by the probabilistic nature of conventional fusion protocols, requiring extensive hardware overhead and feed-forward resources to achieve deterministic outcomes. A deterministic fusion operation with built-in error correction is introduced and experimentally demonstrated. Entanglement now extends to 13 qubits, surpassing prior demonstrations limited to 12, and opens possibilities for more complex quantum calculations; earlier methods struggled with topological complexity as entanglement scaled…
