This research presents a novel hybrid architecture that merges the long coherence times of trapped ions with the reconfigurability of neutral-atom tweezers to address scalability challenges. By utilizing state-dependent displacements, the team achieves precise control over thousands of barium ions while suppressing crosstalk during parallel operations, which is critical for advancing quantum error correction and building robust processors.

Researchers Detail New Ion Trap Array for Scalable Quantum Computing From MCQST

Quantum Zeitgeist5 min de cititArticolul și perspectiva sunt în engleză.

Can quantum computation truly scale without sacrificing qubit stability or operational control. This new architecture combines the long coherence of trapped ions with the flexible, parallel processing of neutral-atom tweezers, offering a potential solution. It establishes a route towards scalable ion-tweezer processors by using state-dependent displacements to generate effective electric dipoles for entanglement.

=A new quantum computer architecture utilising ions held within optical tweezer arrays has been detailed by Benjamin F. Schiffer of the Munich Centre for Quantum Science and Technology (MCQST), and colleagues from Duke University, University of Innsbruck. Combining the extended coherence of trapped-ion qubits with the adaptability of tweezer platforms enables reconfigurable and parallel operations. The team proposes entangling-gate mechanisms using Coulomb interaction and effective electric dipoles, achieving precise control over qubit trajectories without introducing unwanted entanglement with motion. This architecture provides a viable pathway towards…
