This theoretical work refines how continuously monitored qubits are modelled, using a stochastic master equation with separate collapse operators. It makes Cramér-Rao bounds efficient to compute and reports that the sensitivity gains from squeezing persist at non-zero temperatures. Results so far cover only qubit frequency estimation, so readers should treat the broader applicability as unproven.

Researchers Derive Faster Quantum State Estimates Via Squeezing

Previously intractable calculations of quantum system sensitivity are now within reach thanks to an algorithm removing zero-mean stochastic contributions from existing models. This work presents a new formulation of the stochastic master equation, allowing separation of collapse operators during continuous measurement, and enabling efficient evaluation of Cramér-Rao bounds. Demonstrating this on qubit frequency estimation using squeezed states, researchers retain expected exponential improvements with increasing squeeze, even at finite temperatures.

The study describes quantum systems continuously measured via homodyne detection in a squeezed-thermal environment. The formulation identifies two distinct collapse operators corresponding respectively to the monitored and unmonitored channels. Quantum state evolution is expressed directly in terms of Kraus-like operators. This approach allows the application of advanced numerical methods that account for higher-order corrections and…
