Researchers Define ‘quasi-Phases’ Beyond Standard Quantum States

Quantum Zeitgeist4 min de cititArticolul și perspectiva sunt în engleză.

A seemingly superfluous critical point can actually be essential for describing quantum materials, even if not required from a high energy perspective. New work demonstrates that supporting distinct “quasi-phases” forces such points to become unavoidable at lower energies, exceeding previous constraints on phase boundaries. These findings reveal previously hidden structural complexity *within* established states of matter and refine our understanding of topological order.

“Quasi-phases” exist within established phases of matter, regimes connected in broader diagrams but not through standard transitions. This discovery explains interface modes, distinct behaviours at boundaries between regions seemingly within the same phase, and necessitates more complex theoretical frameworks to fully describe them. Supporting distinct quasi-phases proves that critical points, previously considered unnecessary, can be fundamental for describing quantum systems. Materials are traditionally defined by their “phase”, such as solid or liquid; however, research reveals more…
