Researchers have developed a compiler optimization called CAST that strategically manages where qubit losses occur in neutral-atom systems rather than just minimizing total loss. By focusing on "decoder-weighted harm," this technique reduced logical error rates by up to 5.3x across most tested scenarios, significantly improving the stability of quantum computations. This advancement marks a critical step toward practical fault-tolerant quantum computing by addressing specific error patterns inherent to neutral-atom architectures.

Researchers Cut Quantum Error Rates with Optimised Atom Loss

Where atoms land during computation now matters as much as how many are lost. A new optimisation technique improves logical error rates in up to 73% of tested scenarios, achieving gains of 5. 3× under realistic conditions by strategically managing qubit loss within the quantum code itself.

A fidelity improvement of 5.3x has been achieved by optimising atom loss in neutral-atom quantum error correction systems. Compilers previously focused on minimising total atom loss, however Xinyi Li at Stevens Institute of Technology and colleagues developed CAST, a new compiler optimisation pass that instead minimises ‘decoder-weighted harm’ by strategically managing where atoms are lost within the quantum code. This approach recognises that deposition location key impacts logical error rates, lowering them in 35 of 48 tested…
