This breakthrough in monolithic neutron interferometry represents a significant methodological advance for quantum physics, enabling more stable and accessible measurements of long-wavelength phenomena. By replacing vibration-prone discrete components with self-aligning holographic polymer films, the research lowers the barrier to entry for studying fundamental quantum effects involving neutrons.

Researchers Build Stable Neutron Interferometer from Holograms

Quantum Zeitgeist4 min de cititArticolul și perspectiva sunt în engleză.

Neutron beams now pass through an entirely self-aligning interferometer constructed from layered plastic films. Previously, long-wavelength neutron experiments demanded painstaking alignment of individual optical components prone to vibration. This monolithic design bypasses those limitations, offering a simpler route towards precise measurements of quantum phenomena and potentially broadening access to this technique.

A refractive index modulation of approximately 3.4 × 10−2 achieves control for light using stacked holographic photopolymer films, representing a key advance in manipulating both light and very cold neutrons. Saba Shams-Lahijani from Vienna, Institut Laue-Langevin, and University of Salzburg and colleagues fabricated a monolithic double-Laue neutron interferometer from these layers, inherently aligning them to overcome longstanding stability issues with discrete optical elements. The design overcomes longstanding challenges with aligning traditional instruments for long-wavelength neutron…
