This study delivers a critical refinement in atomic metrology by precisely measuring electric-dipole matrix elements in Ba+ ions to suppress blackbody radiation shifts. By minimizing systematic errors in room-temperature optical clocks, the research directly enhances the accuracy required for next-generation quantum sensors and fundamental physics tests. The methodology establishes new benchmarks for theoretical models of relativistic effects in single-electron systems.

Reduced Dipole Element in Barium Develops Quantum Metrology

Quantum Zeitgeist5 min de cititArticolul și perspectiva sunt în engleză.

A high-precision measurement of the reduced electric-dipole matrix element in Ba+ was performed, determining the matrix element to be, corresponding to a ns excited-state radiative lifetime. Combining experimental results with a prior model, the static value a.u. was extracted, directly improving the evaluation of the blackbody radiation shift, and minimizing systematic limitations in room-temperature optical clock error budgets.

Researchers at Quantum Technologies, National University of Singapore have achieved a high-precision measurement of the reduced electric-dipole matrix element in barium+. By comparing off-resonant scattering rates with dispersive Stark-shift measurements, the team determined the static dipole matrix element, corresponding to an excited-state radiative lifetime of nanoseconds. This determination directly improves the evaluation of blackbody radiation (BBR) shift, a major source of error in room-temperature optical clock error budgets. The work also establishes a stringent benchmark for atomic-structure calculations and advances applications in quantum metrology and fundamental physics…
