This research proposes a novel method to detect photon-photon scattering in the vacuum using standing-wave laser interferometers, eliminating the need for external magnetic fields. By leveraging conventional laser sources, the study demonstrates that probing quantum electrodynamics and potential physics beyond the Standard Model is now feasible within laboratory-scale setups. The approach offers a significant sensitivity improvement driven by nonlinear scaling with cavity power, marking a practical advancement in fundamental quantum field experiments.

arXiv:2609.03314v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We propose all-optical tests of photon-photon interactions in the matter vacuum using standing-wave laser interferometers, which do not require external magnetic fields and use conventional laser sources. We show that the interferometric detection of photon-photon scattering predicted by quantum electrodynamics is within reach of laboratory-scale experiments with a sensitivity that improves nonlinearly with the circulating power within the cavity. We outline how such an experiment could be adapted to probe properties of quantum fields beyond the Standard Model of particle physics.
