This research demonstrates that "quantum causal confusion"—where temporal and spatial correlations appear identical—is statistically rare because most dual states are oblique. In these common cases, joint probabilities inherently violate the no-signalling condition, effectively distinguishing between sequential and parallel measurements without ambiguity. The study establishes a general rule for resolving causal ambiguity in quantum systems based on the prevalence of oblique states within the Bloch ball.
Quantum causal confusion is rare, as oblique states dominate

There is a rich class of bipartite quantum correlations between qubits consistent with measurements performed in parallel and sequence, termed quantum causal confusion, mathematically precise by the notion of a dual state. As long as the reduced density operator of a dual state is oblique—meaning all coefficients in its Pauli expansion are non-zero—the resulting joint probabilities will differ, eliminating quantum causal confusion.
James Fullwood of Hainan University and Weixiang Ye have demonstrated that quantum causal confusion, a phenomenon where correlations appear the same whether measured simultaneously or sequentially, is actually rare. Their work reveals that when a dual state, a quantum system exhibiting this ambiguity, possesses what’s known as an oblique state, its temporal joint probabilities inherently violate the no-signalling condition, a cornerstone of physics. This violation distinguishes temporal and spatial scenarios, effectively eliminating the confusion. Because oblique states are statistically common, forming an “open dense subset of the Bloch ball,” the researchers find that resolving causal ambiguity is the typical outcome. The inherent ambiguity in certain quantum systems, dubbed “quantum causal confusion”, is largely resolved by the prevalence of states where every coefficient in a Pauli expansion is non-zero, according to new work. This distinction arises because temporal joint probabilities from these states inherently violate the principle of no-signalling, a cornerstone of physics preventing faster-than-light communication. The work builds on the understanding that dual states can be interpreted as encoding…
