Quantinuum's new work establishes that Pauli Correlation Encoding can be efficiently simulated classically for specific realizations like free-fermionic evolutions, creating a robust baseline to evaluate genuine quantum advantages in binary optimization. This dequantized approach solves problems up to 1000 variables on standard benchmarks such as MaxCut and Knapsack without requiring physical qubits. The result clarifies the boundary between classically simulable correlations and those that truly necessitate quantum hardware for speedup or quality improvements.

Quantinuum’s Correlation-Based Optimization Solves Problems Up To 1000 Variables

Pauli Correlation Encoding (PCE) is a heuristic framework for binary optimisation that encodes classical variables into many-body Pauli observables. While PCE requires fewer qubits than other approaches, it relies on estimating a large number of Pauli expectation values, and recent work introduces efficiently simulable PCE, a class of realisations where all needed expectation values can be computed classically.

Quantinuum, along with Daniele Lizzio Bosco, Gabriel Matos, Chen-Yu Liu, Frederic Rapp, Fabian Finger, Enrico Rinaldi, and Konstantinos Meichanetzidis, has demonstrated a new approach to optimization, solving problems with tens to thousands of variables using a correlation-based method. The work centers on Pauli Correlation Encoding, a framework where classical variables are encoded into many-body Pauli observables, but with a surprising twist: the necessary calculations can be performed classically. Researchers instantiated this using free-fermionic evolutions and Instantaneous Quantum Polynomial circuits, producing high-quality solutions across benchmarks including MaxCut, Maximum Independent Set, Multi-Dimensional Knapsack, and…
