Researchers at the University of Maryland have demonstrated a breakthrough in trapped-ion quantum computing by achieving non-destructive cooling of mixed qubit states using only a single ion species. This "optical-metastable-ground" architecture eliminates the need for complex multi-species systems, significantly simplifying hardware while enabling high-fidelity readout and error correction essential for scalable fault-tolerant machines. The technique reduces motional heating errors during critical operations like syndrome extraction, directly addressing key bottlenecks in building practical quantum computers.

Oregon Team Cools Ion Crystal to Ground State

Can a quantum computer cool its own components mid-calculation without losing information. This work demonstrates single-species cooling of a mixed qubit state, a technique previously requiring complex multi-species trapped ion systems or lacking a method to recool qubits. This advance unlocks non-destructive readout and paves the way for scalable, error-corrected computation.

A new method cools a global motional mode of a mixed metastable-ground state Coulomb crystal to the motional ground state via dissipative operations on the ground qubit without disturbing coherence of the metastable qubit. Sean Brudney of the University of Maryland and colleagues demonstrate that this enables quantum logic spectroscopy to non-destructively read out the state of the metastable qubit using fluorescence detection of the ground qubit. Expanding these demonstrations to larger system sizes should enable the mitigation of motional heating after ion shuttling and syndrome extraction for quantum error correction, both key primitives for future fault-tolerant quantum computers based…
