NVIDIA is expanding Rust's role in GPU programming by introducing native compilation backends for both SIMT and Tile architectures, addressing a long-standing gap where kernel code previously had to be written in C++. This move aligns with the broader industry shift toward systems-level AI infrastructure built on Rust, leveraging its memory safety guarantees to reduce bugs in critical inference engines and drivers. While currently in alpha, these tools offer developers compile-time safety for GPU kernels without locking them out of existing CUDA ecosystems.

NVIDIA Announces CUDA Rust with cuda-oxide (SIMT) and cutile-rs (Tile) for Compile-Time-Safe GPU Kernels

NVIDIA has announced CUDA Rust, a push to make Rust a first-class language for GPU kernels. Two open-source NVlabs projects cover the two CUDA programming models: cuda-oxide compiles SIMT kernels from Rust MIR through Pliron and LLVM to PTX, while cutile-rs JIT-compiles Tile kernels through CUDA Tile IR on stable Rust 1.89+. The post NVIDIA Announces CUDA Rust with cuda-oxide (SIMT) and cutile-rs (Tile) for Compile-Time-Safe GPU Kernels appeared first on MarkTechPost.

NVIDIA has announced CUDA Rust, a push to make Rust a first-class language for writing GPU kernels. Rust code could already launch CUDA kernels, but the kernel body usually had to be written elsewhere. CUDA Rust closes that gap with two NVlabs open-source projects: cuda-oxide for the SIMT model and cutile-rs for the newer Tile model. Both compile Rust kernels natively and use Rust’s ownership rules to reject aliasing bugs at compile time. Is it deployable? Partially. cutile-rs is published on crates.io, runs on…
