This study presents a novel mathematical framework to model how local control errors and environmental entanglement in quantum cooling systems effectively manifest as global depolarizing noise. By demonstrating that optimal cooling performance is achieved with a finite number of qubits rather than an idealized infinite limit, the research provides critical analytical tools for predicting thermodynamic limits in realistic, noisy quantum hardware. These findings are essential for advancing error mitigation strategies and scaling up practical quantum thermodynamics applications.

Noisy quantum cooling

Realistic quantum processes, like those for cooling, inevitably face noise and errors.

Jian Li of Technische Universität Wien, working with colleagues at RIKEN and the Austrian Academy of Sciences, has developed a new framework for understanding how noise impacts quantum cooling processes. The work addresses a counterintuitive problem: that efforts to reduce errors in quantum systems can themselves be undermined by the very noise they aim to correct. Researchers approximate the cumulative effect of gate-dependent noise using a method revealing that optimal cooling performance is achieved with a finite, rather than infinite, number of qubits in noisy conditions. This approach, the team writes, “opens new avenues for exploring noisy quantum thermodynamical processes.” The framework for approximating noise in quantum circuits relies on representing the cumulative effect of errors as a global depolarizing channel, a mathematical tool that simplifies the complex interactions within deep quantum circuits. This approach allows for analytical predictions of cooling limits, cooling dynamics and optimal qubit numbers even when noise is present, extending its applicability to various noise types through a generalized depolarizing approximation. Researchers are now able to model how local noise, originating from inaccurate quantum control and environmental entanglement, effectively transforms…
