The paper shows that classical methods can simulate certain strongly correlated quantum lattices far more cheaply than previously thought: a 100-qubit Heisenberg lattice in about 2 minutes on one CPU thread, versus over 50 hours with DMRG. Results are benchmarked against published variational estimates on specific models, so they don't yet show general speedups for quantum simulation. For quantum readers, the main point is that claims of quantum advantage on these benchmarks need to be checked against improving classical baselines.

A new algorithm, vDBF with Pauli propagation—originally for quantum circuit classical simulation—achieves sub-1% error for 128-qubit lattices.

Researchers at Indiana University and Virginia Tech have developed a new algorithm that dramatically accelerates classical simulation of complex quantum systems. The variational double bracket flow (vDBF) algorithm, using a technique called Pauli Propagation, achieves sub-1% relative errors for Heisenberg and Hubbard lattices of up to 128 qubits. vDBF accurately simulates a 10×10 Heisenberg lattice, containing 100 qubits, in approximately 2 minutes on a single CPU thread, a task that previously required over 50 hours using 64 threads with DMRG. These results demonstrate that classical simulation techniques…
