This study identifies a critical gap in current simulations of four-wave mixing within cold atomic ensembles, specifically regarding the underestimation of coincidence rates for photons with opposing polarizations. By incorporating full hyperfine and Zeeman manifolds into a thirty-two-level model, researchers demonstrate that previously ignored collective atomic interactions significantly influence light emission dynamics. These findings are essential for refining quantum technology prototypes that rely on precise photon pairing for secure communication and advanced computing.

Model Underestimates Photon Coincidence Rates Beyond Single Atoms

Extending previous few-level models which neglected full hyperfine and Zeeman manifolds, this work incorporates two additional levels to better describe internal atomic dynamics. The resulting calculations accurately predict overall photon counts but consistently underestimate coincident detection when photons exhibit opposing polarizations to their driving lasers. This discrepancy suggests previously unconsidered interactions between atoms influence light emission during four-wave mixing.

Accurate modelling of internal atomic structures, incorporating a thirty-two level structure including hyperfine and Zeeman sublevels, yields a thorough method to predict photon emission from cold atoms undergoing four-wave mixing. The detailed approach successfully predicts measured single-photon counts across most laser power levels but reveals discrepancies when examining photons polarized opposite to those driving the process. A limitation within current methods used to predict how light particles become paired during…
