This study establishes a fundamental inverse relationship between environmental memory effects (non-Markovianity) and the sustained information gain achievable during continuous quantum monitoring. By explicitly modeling 'information backflow' using collision models, researchers demonstrate that stronger memory within a system's environment reduces its capacity to retain stable data under repeated observation. These findings are critical for refining theoretical frameworks and simulations of complex quantum processes where past interactions significantly influence present states.

Measurements Lose Information As Environments Become Less Markovian

Quantum Zeitgeist4 min de cititArticolul și perspectiva sunt în engleză.

Previously, investigations into informational steady states assumed lost data did not flow back from the environment to affect measurements. Now, quantifying that ‘backflow’, termed non-Markovianity, reveals an inverse relationship between memory effects and sustained information gained during continuous observation. This work demonstrates a direct link between environmental memory and measurable changes in quantum systems undergoing constant monitoring.

A new method clarifies how memory effects impact informational steady states, points where information gain from measurements balances information lost to the environment. This extends previous studies by explicitly accounting for ‘information backflow’, known as non-Markovianity, previously overlooked in models of these quantum systems and enabling more realistic simulations. Researchers at The University of Tokyo found that ‘memory’ within quantum systems affects their capacity to retain information when continuously…
