This study marks a significant milestone by successfully observing ultrafast quantum tunneling in graphene under strong optical fields with near-perfect probability using advanced laser-electron microscopy techniques. The breakthrough provides critical experimental validation for theoretical models of electron dynamics in 2D materials, offering new pathways for designing next-generation optoelectronic devices and quantum sensors.

Under strong optical fields, electrons in graphene can tunnel across the band gap with extremely high probability, transitioning between different energy bands. Scientists from the University of Regensburg, the University of Marburg, and the Forschungszentrum Jülich combined laser technology with electron microscopy to track this ultrafast quantum process in real time for the first time, discovering that the tunneling probability can reach up to 100%. The research was published in the latest issue of Nature. (Science and Technology Daily)
