Philips Turns Razor into a Portable Accessory: Can Youth Appeal Open New Markets? | The Frontline

36Kr reports that on October 16, Philips launched the third-generation portable razor 'Firefly' in Shanghai. Unlike traditional electric razors focused on shaving efficiency, blade technology, and battery life, this new model features a compact body, six color options, magnetic snap-on covers, and breathing light designs, aiming to integrate daily grooming with young people's fashion, travel, and social lifestyles. This move represents Philips' segmentation of the men's grooming market; compared to traditional razors for mature consumers, Philips hopes to attract younger users through design, portability, and affordable pricing, making the electric razor their first choice. Wu Pinhui, Senior Vice President of Greater China and General Manager of the Health Life Business Group, stated that while the Chinese razor market is mature, many still use manual razors. Philips aims to lower the barrier to entry for electric razors, transforming them from functional tools into consumer goods that combine grooming, skincare, and personal expression. This strategy isn't just about aesthetics; Feng Xue, General Manager of the Men's Grooming Division, noted that research began three to four years ago following young consumers' lifestyles. The Firefly weighs 119g, features magnetic covers with light feedback for modes, a 3D floating blade, and a sensitive skin mode, supporting 3-minute fast charging and up to 40 days of battery life. Philips aims to bring the product into scenarios beyond the bathroom, such as commuting or camping. However, functional performance remains crucial for repeat purchases. The Firefly is part of a broader strategy alongside the 2024 Pebble series, creating a refined product ladder rather than forcing all consumers to buy the same razor. While Philips hopes to make China a hub for global innovation and localize design based on young consumer preferences, the ultimate success depends on sales performance, user structure, and whether this youth-focused design can convert into stable demand and expand the mature electric razor market.
