IMF Chief: Annual Meetings Reach Three Core Consensuses

On October 17 local time, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, speaking at the closing remarks of the 2026 Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand, said the meetings held in-depth discussions on global economic resilience, the development of artificial intelligence and its risks, and global economic divergence, and reached three core consensuses. Georgieva noted that AI has become an important driver of economic growth, but excessive reliance on a single growth engine also brings risks. The foundation of global economic resilience is currently facing challenges. Second, global economic divergence is growing. Countries that have not taken part in the AI value chain, along with energy-importing countries hit by war, face greater development pressure, and the dividends of global economic growth have not yet been shared equitably. Third, AI is developing rapidly, and current policy choices will profoundly shape its future direction. There is broad agreement that while fully unlocking the dividends of AI development, it is also necessary to establish essential safeguards, manage related risks, and strengthen cooperation among governments, businesses, and international institutions. Georgieva said that during the meetings, the IMF received new capacity-building funding commitments of more than $100 million from 10 partners, which will be used to help countries strengthen policy capabilities and enhance economic resilience.
