This NEDO-funded project pairs quantum computing with AI and machine learning for materials discovery, targeting batteries, optical materials, and superconductors. For readers, the key question is whether the hybrid approach yields measurable gains in prediction accuracy and R&D speed. Those claims will only be tested once the fiscal 2026-2028 experimental results are published.
SoftBank Teams Up with Five Japanese Companies to Develop Quantum Computing Materials Platform
Toppan Holdings, Aisin, Asahi Kasei, SoftBank, AGC and DIC announced that a research and development project for a quantum technology innovation materials development platform, jointly proposed by the six companies, has been selected by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). The project, scheduled to run from fiscal 2026 through fiscal 2028, will combine quantum computing with artificial intelligence and machine learning to explore applications in next-generation batteries, optical functional materials and superconducting materials, aiming to improve materials R&D efficiency and prediction accuracy and to verify the practical value of the technology through experimental feedback.
