This study introduces the concept of "quantum dissipative paraelectricity," demonstrating that external dissipation can suppress spontaneous symmetry breaking even when competing energy landscapes favor it. By analytically defining distinct quantum paraelectric and ferroelectric regimes, the work provides a rigorous framework for controlling material properties during phase transitions, which is critical for advancing quantum memory storage technologies. The findings challenge traditional assumptions about order parameters by highlighting the active role of coupling with external degrees of freedom in stabilizing specific quantum states.

Institut Néel Team Defines Quantum Paraelectric Behaviour

Observable asymmetry need not occur within materials possessing competing energy landscapes, challenging long-held assumptions about phase transitions. Until now, inferences regarding spontaneous symmetry breaking relied solely upon examining a material’s internal potential; this work demonstrates dissipation actively suppresses such behaviour via coupling with external degrees of freedom. The findings define both quantum paraelectric and ferroelectric regimes analytically, offering new insight into controlling material properties at the quantum level.

The researchers have defined a new 'quantum dissipative paraelectricity' regime where observable symmetry breaking is suppressed during transitions toward stable states; this occurs even when a double-well structure dominates over zero-point fluctuations. Exploiting analytical solutions within a quasi-exactly solvable model, applied broadly to quantum phase transitions and specifically examined through the lens of ferroelectrics, the team provides a strict definition for both quantum paraelectric and ferroelectric regimes. Researchers have established that a material's transition between different states, important…
