Researchers at Queen's University and TU Berlin demonstrate how strong magnetic fields induce intrinsic nonlocality in 2D electron gases within quantum wells, altering emission spectra over hundreds of nanometers. By deriving a microscopic Green's function that accounts for spatial dispersion rather than local approximations, the study reveals enhanced light emissions via near-field gradients affecting dipole-forbidden transitions. These findings provide critical theoretical frameworks for designing nanostructured terahertz architectures and manipulating Landau level polaritons in quantum devices.

How Nonlocal Effects Alter Emission Spectra From Quantum Wells

Strong magnetic fields induce Landau levels in 2D electron gases, but even at a few Tesla, orbital radii span tens of nanometers, creating intrinsic nonlocality.

Even the smallest electron orbit within a gallium arsenide quantum well, created by a magnetic field of a few Tesla, spans tens of nanometers, revealing an inherent “nonlocal” response to electromagnetic excitation. Researchers at Queen’s University and Technische Universität Berlin demonstrate that these nonlocal effects, stemming from the spatial dispersion of Landau levels, modify electromagnetic responses at distances up to hundreds of nanometers, a surprisingly large range for quantum phenomena. From a microscopic theory of the nonlocal susceptibility, they derive the Green’s function, the central quantity governing all electromagnetic interactions, and evaluate Purcell factors, Lamb shifts,…
