This research demonstrates unprecedented control over nanomechanical oscillators at the zero-point motion scale by achieving tunable nonlinear electromechanics in carbon nanotubes coupled with quantum dots. By creating a mechanical Kerr nonlinearity three orders of magnitude larger than previous efforts, this work establishes a critical platform for strong anharmonicity and precise continuous readout essential for advancing hybrid quantum systems. The ability to manipulate motion at the fundamental limit imposed by quantum mechanics represents a significant step toward scalable quantum devices that integrate mechanical elements with electronic control.

ICFO – Institut de Ciències Fotòniques researchers achieved tunable nonlinear electromechanics at the zero-point motion scale, controlling motion with unprecedented precision.

Researchers at ICFO, Institut de Ciències Fotòniques in Barcelona and Universite de Bordeaux, University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory have achieved control of motion at the zero-point motion scale, manipulating movement at the fundamental limit imposed by quantum mechanics. The team, led by C. B. Møller and R. Tormo-Queralt, demonstrated tunable nonlinear electromechanics by coupling a nanotube mechanical oscillator with a double-quantum-dot electronic two-level system, enabling a mechanical…
