This investigation reveals how a compromised attacker workstation inadvertently exposed the full lifecycle of a state-sponsored phishing campaign, including specific Remote Access Tools (RATs) and custom loaders used to target Colombia. The findings highlight critical vulnerabilities in supply chain security and developer practices, showing how legitimate interpreters can be repurposed to hide malicious scripts within GitHub repositories. For AI and quantum practitioners, this underscores the necessity of robust threat intelligence pipelines that can parse unstructured malware artifacts to anticipate evolving attack vectors before they are weaponized against new targets.

The break came after an apparent attacker workstation was infected by a separate information-stealing program, leaving a record of its activity. The operation used phishing emails impersonating Colombian judicial bodies and traffic authorities. Victims were directed to password-protected archives, a technique also seen in recent password-protected archive attacks that can reduce automated email scanning and delay detection.
