This breakthrough demonstrates the ability to resolve single-atom collisions with 96% certainty using quantum-controlled nanospheres, marking a significant leap in measuring fundamental forces at microscopic scales. By detecting momentum transfers previously indistinguishable from background noise, this work establishes a new foundation for ultra-sensitive nanoscale sensors and probes of short-range interactions.
Eth Zürich Team Detects Atom Impacts with 96% Certainty

A detected impulse as small as 50 keV/c, more than three orders of magnitude less than that from an alpha particle’s recoil, now allows scientists to resolve single atom collisions with macroscopic objects. This sensitivity stems from measurements on a quantum-controlled nanosphere, revealing individual momentum transfers with 96% confidence. The work represents a first advance towards probing fundamental forces at extremely short distances and developing novel nanoscale sensors.
Maxime Perdriat and colleagues at École Normale Supérieure PSL, Sorbonne University, CNRS and Laboratoire Kastler Brossel have observed single momentum kicks resulting from xenon atoms colliding with a levitated nanosphere cooled to its quantum ground state, measured with 96% confidence. This sensitive detection of atomic impacts enables investigations into fundamental interactions at tiny scales. The team has achieved an unprecedented ability to measure forces from…
