This research establishes that simpler non-local quantum computation protocols can achieve the same security bounds as more complex ones in position-verification schemes. By demonstrating reductions between distinct tasks, the study reveals a common scaling for entanglement costs across various practical quantum communication protocols. These findings streamline theoretical frameworks and may lead to more efficient designs for secure distributed quantum systems.

Cnrs Team Identifies Reductions Between Non-Local Computation Tasks for Complexity Analysis

Equivalence of non-local computation tasks beyond Clifford operations Previously, securing quantum communication demanded ever-increasing entanglement resources for position-verification. This work demonstrates that implementing simpler non-local quantum computation tasks, such as redirecting a quantum system, can achieve the same security as more complex operations like controlled single qubit measurements. Consequently, many feasible position-verification schemes now appear to share a common scaling for entanglement cost.

Andreas Bluhm and colleagues at CNRS, in collaboration with Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of Amsterdam, Sorbonne University, and Perimeter Institute, have investigated the fundamental relationships between different non-local quantum computation tasks, revealing insights into their relative complexity and security implications. Reductions demonstrate that seemingly distinct tasks share underlying connections, where solving one task enables efficient solutions to others. The research focuses on tasks relevant to quantum position-verification, specifically those with large classical inputs and small quantum inputs, and shows that protocols for simple quantum redirection can achieve the controlled application of complex unitaries. Consequently, numerous practical position-verification schemes exhibit similar entanglement costs and security levels,…
