JPMorgan Chase and Quantinuum have successfully executed fault-tolerant quantum algorithms like QAOA and HHL using 97 physical qubits, marking a critical milestone in scalable quantum computation. By leveraging the Steane code to achieve high-fidelity logical T gates, this work demonstrates that complex circuits can now operate with error rates low enough for practical scientific applications such as solving linear systems. This progression from non-fault-tolerant experiments to end-to-end logical execution is essential for realizing the utility of quantum advantage in financial modeling and optimization.

Fault tolerance enabled execution of QAOA and HHL algorithms, demonstrating how quantum algorithms can scale to 97 physical qubits using the Steane code.

Researchers have achieved fault-tolerant execution of quantum algorithms using 97 physical qubits, a significant step toward scalable quantum computation. The team from JPMorganChase and Quantinuum demonstrated the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm and the Harrow-Hassidim-Lloyd algorithm on Quantinuum’s H2 and Helios processors, using the ⟦ 7, 1, 3 ⟧ Steane code for error correction. This work marks the first end-to-end execution of logical quantum algorithms using only fault-tolerant components, with the results showing better-than-random performance even with complex circuits containing 2132 two-qubit gates. A logical T gate, important for universal quantum computation using the Steane code, achieved 0.960(6) fidelity, a significant improvement over prior non-fault-tolerant implementations which demonstrated an infidelity of 14× 10–3. This new gate, tested on Quantinuum’s H2-1 processor,…
