This update addresses a critical friction point for AI agents by enabling granular OAuth scope selection, allowing users to deny specific permissions rather than rejecting an entire application's broad request. By distinguishing between required and optional scopes within a single flow, Cloudflare mitigates the "all-or-nothing" consent problem that currently hinders the deployment of autonomous agents in sensitive environments. This infrastructure-level refinement is essential for scaling AI applications that require diverse access levels without triggering excessive user friction.
Cloudflare Adds Optional OAuth Scopes, Letting Developers Mark What Users May Decline
Cloudflare has added optional OAuth scopes, letting client owners mark which permissions users may deselect at consent. The company names MCP servers as the motivating case, since agents request the union of everything they might do. Partial consent exists elsewhere, but developer control over which scopes are droppable does not. By Steef-Jan Wiggers
Cloudflare has added optional OAuth scopes, letting users deselect individual permissions on the consent screen instead of approving or denying an application's full request. Client owners mark which scopes may be dropped, and the company names MCP servers as the motivating case. The problem it targets is specific to agents. An application built around a handful of scopes can describe its access needs on a consent screen, and a user can reasonably judge them. An agent cannot. As Cloudflare puts it,…
