Researchers have demonstrated that boron nitride nanotubes can serve as stable, room-temperature sources of single photons across the visible spectrum, addressing key scalability challenges for quantum communication networks. By utilizing surface passivation to minimize blinking events and achieving sub-nanosecond lifetimes, this work enables the integration of dense, multi-wavelength emitters into compact nanophotonic devices. This advancement represents a significant step toward practical, deterministic single-photon sources essential for building robust quantum information systems.

Boron nitride nanotubes emit quantum light at room temperature

Quantum Zeitgeist2 min de cititArticolul și perspectiva sunt în engleză.

Quantum information systems require bright sources of single photons, and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) flakes have been studied as a host material for these, though dimensionality can be reduced through the implementation of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs). Here, researchers investigate the potential of BNNTs as room-temperature single photon emitters (SPEs) spanning the visible spectrum, exhibiting lifetimes as fast as 0.5 ns.
