This paper targets a practical problem in bosonic quantum error correction: GKP qubits are designed for displacement errors, but real superconducting hardware suffers from loss, dephasing, and inefficient measurements. The reported gain, a decoder adjustment after each logical gate that cuts gate infidelity by orders of magnitude, is a notable result if it holds up under realistic noise. Readers should still treat it as a simulation-stage optimization and watch for experimental validation on hardware.

The Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) code is a route to fault-tolerant quantum computing, sufficient to achieve universal quantum computing with Gaussian resources and GKP Pauli-eigenstate preparation. There is a disconnect between the noise model GKP qubits are designed to correct and the conditions affecting GKP qubits in superconducting devices, including realistic noise channels, logical gates, and inefficient measurements.

Mackenzie H. Shaw of The University of Sydney and colleagues are tackling a key challenge in building practical quantum computers: bridging the gap between the theoretical design of Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) qubits and the realities of superconducting devices. Their work addresses a disconnect between noise models, GKP qubits are designed to correct uniform displacement errors, but experience loss, dephasing and measurement inefficiencies in practice. The researchers demonstrate that a decoder modification implemented after each logical gate can reduce gate infidelity by multiple orders of magnitude, offering a significant optimization pathway. The authors analyze the error-spreading properties of GKP Clifford gates and describe how a modification in the decoder following the implementation of each gate can reduce the gate infidelity by multiple orders of magnitude. GKP codes use quantum harmonic oscillators to encode logical information within a continuous variable (CV) Hilbert space, enabling the construction of robust qubits from a…
