Researchers at the University of Tennessee have demonstrated that miniature atomic clocks combined with computational post-processing can synchronize quantum network nodes without requiring dedicated timing links like White Rabbit systems. This breakthrough achieves Hong-Ou-Mandel interference visibility exceeding 70% on a deployed metropolitan fiber network, validating a scalable architecture essential for future airborne and space-based quantum communications. By eliminating the need for star-shaped topologies or specialized infrastructure, this approach significantly enhances the flexibility required to build practical, large-scale quantum internet deployments.

Atomic Clocks Enable Link-Free Quantum Network Synchronisation

Quantum Zeitgeist6 min de cititArticolul și perspectiva sunt în engleză.

Atomic-clock-based synchronization now achieves timing performance comparable to White Rabbit networks and demonstrates Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with over 70% visibility. This result bypasses the need for dedicated timing links, previously considered essential for stable quantum networks. The demonstration validates the approach across a deployed metropolitan fibre network with three nodes, opening avenues for airborne and space-based quantum communication.

A new method for synchronising quantum network nodes without dedicated timing-distribution infrastructure has been achieved. Jacob E. Humberd and colleagues at University of Tennessee validate this link-free approach using miniature rubidium atomic clocks and computational post-processing on a metropolitan-scale telecom fibre network spanning three nodes. Achieving timing performance comparable to White Rabbit benchmarks and maintaining stability over eight hours, the researchers observed Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with over 70% visibility. This first observation of quantum interference across a deployed network synchronised entirely without dedicated timing links represents a key step towards scalable and practical quantum networks, particularly for challenging environments like airborne and space-based applications. Hong-Ou-Mandel interference visibility exceeded 70%, matching performance previously only attainable with White Rabbit systems. The University of Tennessee and…
