This research reports an asymmetry in supersolidity within doped lattice systems, where one side exhibits superfluid properties while the other remains rigid. By independently controlling particle addition versus removal, the team has isolated factors governing density ordering and defect mobility to create a new state of matter with finite compressibility on only one side. While this discovery advances fundamental quantum materials science, it does not yet demonstrate practical applications for AI algorithms or scalable quantum computing architectures.
Anhui Normal Team Finds One-Sided Supersolidity in Doped Lattices

One side of a material can now exhibit supersolidity while the other remains rigidly ordered, a behaviour previously unseen in doped systems. Unlike earlier work establishing doped-solid supersolidity, this research demonstrates control over both density ordering and defect mobility to achieve this asymmetry. Finite compressibility and superfluid stiffness are observed on the particle side, while the hole side forms a locked solid.
Compressibility exceeds zero (κ > 0) on the particle side of a doped material, indicating a new state of matter. The team from Anhui Normal University in China achieved this one-sided supersolidity by engineering dipolar interactions within a lattice solid. Previously, control over doped-solid supersolidity lacked independent control over density ordering and defect movement; this research now isolates those factors. An asymmetry in materials exhibiting supersolidity—a state where matter behaves as both a…
